the project
Next to Morro Rock, a 581’ tall volcanic plug in Morro Bay, CA, there is a 100’ wide trench. Until 2014, this trench was used to dump water from the nearby power plant into the ocean; since then, it has been abandoned, guarded by chain link fence. Because of the sacredness of the rock upheld by the area’s Native American tribes, my studio was assigned to envision an interfaith chapel: a place of worship that could be used by anyone of any faith background. The program included a main chapel, secondary and side chapels, and administration space.
